We watch old movies and videos in lieu of TV these days. One that came to mind last night was City Slickers, you know urban cowboys trying to make a trail drive, made in 1991 with Billy Crystal and Jack Palance. It doesn't seem that long ago but many of the young people on here may not even know about it. There are clips on YouTube of Jack Palance holding up one finger and asking Crystal "What is your one thing?". The post is not so much about the movie as the question asked in it. I am curious, how many people have that One Thing in their life and what is it?

Wow. Deep. LOL

I had to go to Youtube and look it up because it's been so long since I've seen it....

Hmmmm...... Lemme think here...

I kind of came up with a "One and a half" thing....

Loving my family and having us be self reliant. (or as close to as possible.)

My family by the way does not consist of aunts and uncles... Myself, the wonderful woman in my life, and our dogs, cats and chickens make up my family.

My Dear Mother does not understand (and here I will rant for a few minutes) that I HAVE my own family and my own life. (even though we're not married yet, we have our own family as far as I'm concerned.) She doesn't understand that I've got my own stuff to attend to and that keeps me plenty busy.

Mom's family always had their noses so far up each other's butts that it was ridiculous... My one uncle would spend most of his time at my OTHER Uncle's house, doing stuff around the yard... swimming in the pool, and my cousins lived next door to my one uncle. There was a path worn in the grass back and forth between houses.

Dear mother can't understand why I won't drive half an hour to help her hang a picture and stop for a cup of coffee, but I've got a huge garden to tend to, and I run a business out of the house. When I have a day off I don't wanna waste half a day driving around the state "For a cup of coffee" because you KNOW that hanging that one picture turns into "oh. WHILE YOU'RE HERE Can you help me hang these blinds... and change the filter in the air conditioner ducts.... and can you help me dig this rock out.... etc etc etc.....

I guess my ONE thing is MY Family.

WOW. Where'd all that come from!?!? Stop asking such deep questions!

;)Hello. I really like your question. People travel this earth wondering what they are missing. They feel like they have this hole inside them. They try to fill it with all sorts of things but this emptiness, loneliness, or what ever some may call it only gets larger and consumes them. Without finding that "One thing" you cannot be truley content or happy. This came to me when I was 25 years old. Of all the things I tried to fill this space with, it only needed "GOD"!

Don't think I am picking on you, but my dad died when I was 17, three days before my HS graduation, and I was lucky enough to keep my mom for another 20 years. She has been gone 18 years and there is hardly a day that goes by I don't think of her or remember one of her wonderful old sayings . . .I use many of them myself. . .I would give anything to have them back for a week, just to show them my kids (my mom knew my kids, but died before they were very old) and their kids . .. one afternoon isn't going to make or break your daily plans. GO SEE YOUR MOTHER!!! There is an old expression that I use whenever I hear someone exasperated about their parents . . ."no matter what you think of your parents in life, you will miss them terribly in death." I am not writing this to start an argument . . .just stating my opinions. I think I have been precious enough to most of my five kids for them to miss me when I am gone, and want to be with me while I am still here. There isn't a whole lot more I can ask for in this life, other than to love and be loved.

For those without a "One Thing", ask those close to you if you have one, you may have One Thing and not know it or even want to know what it is. Perhaps a deep subject but hopefully one worth considering here in Random Ramblings.

Plus, even though smoking is ......... (not intended to hijack my own thread) for you, the old character actors, such as Palance, made an art out of it. A scene of simplicity indicative of a lifestyle that a lot of us are churning the afterburners trying to find.

DH always is wanting to win the lottery and I tell him each time, I've won the lottery, I have him and my 3 children, a roof over our heads, wonderful pets, good health, what more do we need?!?!!?

So I've found my "one thing" and way more!!!!

My one thing was being able to provide for my family,& keeping us United. I've been a father since I was 17 years old. Having 3 kids, now 17,15,&13. I've always made a point of being the hardest working guy on the crew.(a persons value being based on the amount of work that can be accomplished)(I'm very physically fit) I also read blueprints & have overseen large building projects. I've studied under old school master carpenters. Now, I cant buy a job in this economy. I feel like I've lost who I was. I may not of ever had allot, but I've always been able to walk with my head high because I've always been respected for that. I've never let my family down. Now I feel like I need to get that one thing back in my life, & cant find it anywhere. It's not about the money, It's about having a purpose, and being able to pass on my knowledge that may someday be lost.........The question better asked, is whats that one thing that keeps you from feeling lost?....I don't think you'll know until you've lost it.................PS.. Go see your mother Whispering Winds! She spent her life making you that one thing, don't take that from her.
