Hi everyone my name is Clare. And we have 3 chickens, 2 Lohman and 1 Australope. they are 17wks old and we received 2 eggs today. I do have concerns with them as they are extremely loud and do need some advice as to if there is anyway to quieten them otherwise we will have to rehome them :(

Sounds like you have a lovely flock! Aren't those fresh eggs just the best!?

As for them making lots of noise, there are several questions you need to ask yourself: First of all, are you sure the are all hens? Secondly, are they kept in a cramped space? (This will often cause them to get cranky and loud.) Are they receiving enough water and nutrients in their diet? (Poor diets or lack of water can cause them to get stressed and make lots of noise.) And lastly, are all of them laying? (Hens in lay tend to be louder than hens who aren't.) The best thing you can do for them is make sure they have plenty of space, access to water, food, fresh air, sunshine and dirt and have plenty of things to entertain them. Bored chickens often grow loud too.

HI Clare. :) :welcome We are glad you joined us. That sounds like a neat little flock, as to your question if there's anyway to quite them, it really depends on the breed you have. Some breeds like to talk a lot and some don't. For example Cochins, Cochins are very quite and docile. I'm not totally educated on this topic, so I'm not sure which ones would make the most noise and which ones won't. I hope you can get some answers to this soon, if you can't get any here, you can always check out other forums on here too. :) If you have any other questions I'd love to help. I have had and still have a lot of chickens, and it also done a lot of research because of it. :rolleyes:

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Assuming all of your birds are female, there's not a lot you can do to quieten them down. I've had some pretty quiet Australorps over the years, but Lohman is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links and all the Red Sex Links I've had over the years (no matter what label they were sold under) have all been very noisy. Some of the quietest breeds I've had (as chickens go) have been Brahmas, Silkies, Cochins, and Orpingtons. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. While they are in the coop, maybe they will quiet down for some muzak on a radio or it can cover up come of their noise.

It's been my experience with a mixed flock that some are louder than others but that doesn't always hold true based on breed alone. For example, I have 2 Speckled Sussex; one is the quietest little girl of all, she barely does more than softly chatter. Her sister on the other hand sounds like a fish wife from the old country...always loud, always something to raise a ruckus about, always talking (she's very good natured, just loud).

I hope you don't have to re-home your chattery girls and the neighbors aren't complaining. Congrats on the eggs!
