Anyone else out there breeding clean-legged varieties of Marans? I really like the clean legged variety better than the feather-legged. I know they aren't "standard" but I like them better, and they lay better for me than the feather-legged. Just wondering if anyone else has had experiences with the clean-legged variety?

I have one blue copper hen that is clean legged but I have not noticed a difference in her laying abilities vs her feather legged sisters or daughters.

Do you have others and are the others feather-legged? Are some Marans just not carrying a feather related gene? Are the clean legged type just some kind of defective gene?

Right, some Marans do not carry the gene for feathered shanks. The clean legged type are not a defective gene, the clean legged variety are primarily the English/ British type (???) I believe..... and correct me here, please?!
I read the history but have not and did not retain all the facts but as I recall it had something to do with not being able to import the French birds to England (north anyway) or something and then something to do with the war??????? oh man... and here is where I cannot recall fact and quote, sorry someone else will have to jump in an help out....please!

My feeble mind..... gain a fact, lose a fact!

I do have more Marans, several. I only have 2 clean legged adults. 1 roo and 1 hen. I do have some clean legged babies that I am growing out from using those two in the breeding pen with three other feather legged gals. Breeding the feathered legs back into your birds, if that is what a person prefers, is pretty easy in the grand scheme of things when considering Marans.... EGG COLOR, body type/size and different color varieties.

Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance. You can read and find a lot of information about Marans in the Marans thread and by doing a thread search by just typing in Marans. Lots of great stuff to read in searches......lots!

I have some but not by choice really.

The eggs I bought were supposed to be from feather legged.

The clean leg genes come from the Marans being crossed with other breeds. The more feather legged chicks a hen/rooster produces, the more pure Maran it is considered to be.
