Looking for some ideas how to keep our waterer clean (er). I dump the tray out daily to rid it of dirt and hay and whatever the ladies kick in it. But it greens up pretty quick. I try to wipe down quick ever other day or so, and clean when I refill. I just feel bad bc ut gets so dirt so quick.

I have our water on a block to raise it about two inches from the ground. I still have to clean/rinse it every few days when I refill it. It’s only a 2 gal waterer. We also have a hanging waterer on the side.

We have ours up on a piece of wood for now, as we have no where to hang out of the weather yet. I just want sure if I was doing something wrong or not

I’m new to the chicken thing... but our girls have always been messy. when we had to level to the ground we would be clearing it out 7-10 times a day or everytime I turned about wood chips were in the entire thing or it was turned over. Good luck!

For now I put my 3 gallon on a cinder block. My bigger girls will sometimes kick bedding or hay into it. But it’s a lot better than keeping it on the ground. I’m about to make a pvc design and do away with the conventional waterers.

Make a DIY waterer with horizontal nipples (amazon), you won't be sorry, clean water 24/7. I was away for 8 days, I have 2 waterers (10 gal), no one watching my chickens, no worries about water for them while I was away. I also use 2 DIY no waste feeders, for my feed.

Yes, pretty much. Once one of them start using it, all the others will want to use it. Chickens like shinny and red things. If you make a waterer, take away all other water sources, when you introduce it. You might need to tap the nipple, but mine pretty much took to it on their own in a few minutes. You will know they are getting water when they tilt their head back, to swallow. Pick a time to introduce it when you can be there, to make sure they are using it.

Can't help you there.... I hang a plastic waterer and my rooster always does a high kick stretchy leg kinda thingy to it and get dirt into it I don't know why he does it, just weird.
