Hello! I have a buff cochin bantam. How do you clean her backside feathers? Her eggs come out clean but her poop has gotten stuck on the feathers. Will this hurt anything or just an eye sore?

Use the following:
A paper towel(s)
Baby shampoo (if severe)
A baby bristle tooth brush

Wet the towel with warm water and a little shampoo. Lightly rub back and forth. If its really clumped, use the tooth brush to work out the knots)

Good luck!
( it works, trust me. Try doing it to 23 birds at a time) ;)

23 at one time. No thank you

I have a bantam rooster who always got poop stuck to his bottom. It would then dry stuck there and more would stick to it.

I only notices as I was not getting many fertile eggs I website said that the breeders often trim the feathers on the rooster butt so he can mate better. When I looked I saw all that poop!!!!

First time I washed him. He got dirty again after less than a week.

I did not want to wash him again, so this time I used some scissors and give him a 'feather butt cut'!

Its worked! Since then he stays really clean.

I read that many feathery fluffy bottom chickens can get this problem and its a good idea to trim some of the feathers away.

Just an idea for you.

We've got a pair with super fluff butts and we just trim the feathers below the vent a little and problem solved.
