Cleaning eggs?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but my four month old chickens are laying eggs!!!! Yay! Lol this is my first chicken experience :) They started laying long before we thought they would so we didn't have a nest box up. We just put one up but the dozen or so eggs they've laid around the coop are kind of messy... How and when do you clean them? Hubby is wanting to sell some to his coworkers, should I clean them right before he takes them into work? I know you're not really supposed to clean them until right before you use them, but since we're selling them, I don't want to give them away all messy. How do you do it, and what do you use? Thanks!

If the egg is poopy, I rinse it under running water. The temp should be higher than the temp of the egg, as this encourages bacteria to move out of the egg instead of into it. Ideally, of course, your hens won't poop in the nest and your eggs will be clean. I never wash these, even before I crack them to cook. Many people who incubate eggs in an incubator will only incubate unwashed eggs.

I recently made this post in another thread ... I've edited it a bit from the original post ...

What I would stress up front is that you should for sure check your state regulations on selling eggs, and on washing eggs. Things seem to vary a lot by state. I've even read comments in threads here about people getting turned in for not following the local regulations.
