Hi,

one of our hens has been frequently laying membranous eggs and as a result the liquids from the eggs have been creating a mess. I lay clear plastic liner under the straw and have to throw it away everytime. Some time the liquids seep into the actual wooden tray of the nest and those are hard to clean and they smell badly.

What other solutions are out there to deal with soft eggs in the nest and is there a tried way to get the nest rid of that smell? I know the nutrition is off-topic for this sub-forum, but just so that you know, I have tried feeding them crushed shells in their feed to prevent from laying soft and broken eggs.

Thanks!

I have pullets starting to lay and have been dealing with this for the last couple of weeks also, and it is annoying. I put a lot of wood shavings in the nests on top of a little straw, they absorb the liquid better. If you are using wooden boxes they need to be sealed with a wood sealer/preservative to make them watertight and cleanable. I actually use cardboard boxes for nests, that way I can just throw them away periodically. Other people use plastic or metal tubs or bins, they are all easier to clean than wood.

You may want to think for the chickens first.. you should give them layer feed plus grit to avoid soft shells... not thinking how to clean the mess and your chickens are having health issues...
