Cleaning my coop run

Its a 6x8 coop and the chicken guy that makes them said its good for up to 12 birds.

Your chicken guy lied to you, I'm afraid...anyone touting that one could put 12 chickens in that coop~even if they were bantam breeds~is either misinformed or not being honest. As you can already tell, even with your birds as small as they are, the space is already starting to stink. Any time you have animal housing and pens that stink, you either have too many animals in one space or you are mismanaging the bedding. In this case, it's too many birds in too small a space, even if you free range out of it. Come winter they will be spending a lot of time in that coop and you'll need more ventilation and more space if they are to live well.

I know that doesn't go over well when you've spent money on a coop, but you have options....either decrease the flock or increase the ventilation and total living area. Even a deep litter will be nigh impossible in that little pen and coop, so a lot of cleaning is in your future if you would have something that smells decent and doesn't attract flies, not to mention wanting to maintain healthy birds.

As Aart said, that would make a nice place for one broody and chicks, but a flock of chickens will have a miserable life in that space when the weather is bad. It would be like you and four other people living in your bedroom together, eating, drinking, sleeping and pooping there all winter, but are able to go out into other parts of the house during the warmer months, except at night, that is, when you'd have to sleep together in the same bed.

Ugh.... And i began with 7 and returned 2 back to the farm because they were roos! What if i got another coop around a similar size or a bit bigger so they had 2 to sleep in? The area around the coop and run will be fenced in soon. Right now the birds dont seem crowded in there. They all huddle on the roost in one tiny corner and go right to sleep. But i guess that will change.
