Cleaning your coop

I have a chain link dog run and a coop inside. How do you clean out the run? Do i rake it up every once in a while? I don't want too much poop to build up in it. I plan to let them range but I want them to get used to us first before I do. When I let them range I worry that the poop will get into my kids playing areas. I can discourage them in those areas but should I be careful with the areas that they do range in for the poop and my kids health?

I don't know about discouraging them from areas other than a fence, I have a dog kennel run also I have about 5 inches of sand very easy to clean with a cat litter scoop and a rake, put landscape fabric down before the sand so it doesn't get eaten up by the ground and 2x6's as a boarder to hold the sand in and believe me you will love it.
