Just wanted to say Hi and thanks to everyone for making this such a great forum.

My wife and I are going to start keeping chickens this year by converting a 5x10 section of our shed into a coop. We're pretty excited about farm fresh eggs from our backyard. We're thinking maybe a dozen large egg layers for 2009 and we can convert the entire shed if we get really serious about producing eggs and/or meat chickens. I hear it's addicting. Right now eggs for us, our parents, and some neighbors/co-workers if there are extras is enough.

I'm planning on posting my coop plans for feedback in the coop/run section before I begin construction/renovation.

If anyone is in the Cleveland, OH area and would be willing to let us tour their coop setup and share any local info on where to get good prices on organic feed, bedding, etc. we would be thrilled! We're in Strongsville, south and west of Cleveland.

We're also thinking about getting our birds from Meyer Hatchery in Polk, OH, so let me know if you've had a good or bad experience with them.

We also are ramping up our organic gardening and food preserving this year as much as we are able. Our two year old twin boys keep us mighty busy.

i am a bit south east of you in Youngstown. It is addicting for sure. Meyer over in Polk is a good hatchery. YOu might also want to check ou the Millersburg/HolmesCounty area amish flea markets and auctions. Or you could get a incubator and hatch mail ordered eggs. Its so much fun and gets the kids involved.

My DH and I go to Cleveland several times a year; we usually stay near Vermilion by Dave and Buster's. There are lots of things to see and do in that area. One of our favorite haunts is Little Italy. I am very familiar with northern Ohio because I used to be a supervisor at Cedar Point.

Well I'll go ahead and let you in on the secret.................. CONVERT THE WHOLE SHED CUS YOUR GONNA NEED IT!!!! Glad to have you here! I worked for an envelope company in Oberlin, just south of Cleveland, is that close to you?

We are about 40 minutes from Oberlin and I am considering travelling there a few times in March to get the new beekeeper training from the Lorain County Beekeepers Association.

I knew I'd hear about converting the whole shed! I want to break the neighbors in slowly as well as learn from any mistakes with a smaller flock.

We are considering any highly productive layers with calm disposition (especially with our young sons). We're thinking Black Stars, Australorps, and, of course, Buckeyes.
