Clicker Training the Rooster

10/28-

Between the weather and catching up on things that got neglected while working on a Tyrannosaurus costume (and a *cough* *cough* incubator *cough* *cough), I havent been able to do much more with Puddys training.

The good news is, the couple of times I've tried, he seems to have remembered the drill. Yesterday he turned, looked at me over his shoulder, looked away again, looked at me again, then took two steps away.

When he heard the clicker, he came right back over to me to get his treat.

Of course, later in the day he chased my son and his friend across the yard, and I had to intervene. Later still, I was walking across the yard and felt a peck at the back of my leg. I dont know if it was him for sure (because they were all there practically tripping me), but I ended up disciplining him just the same.

He got carried around the run, taken in the house & held by the two 5yo's he had chased earlier (he was NOT happy about that!), then held by them again out in the run in full view of the hens (he was even less happy about that!), and then forced into a squat in the run & held down until his eyes closed. It was probably overkill, and I probably just gave him a mixed message about our relationship, but he wouldnt even look at me for the rest of the day.

I'll have a bit more time to work with him tomorrow.

Also- lesson learned: when clicker training a chicken outside, lock the dogs in the house.

Tell that to the chicken that day after day cannot manage to walk through the open door in our run... She paces side to side on side of the run without the open door trying to find an opening. The door never moves but it can still take her 10-20 minutes to find her way out to the treats in the larger part of the run.

I am going to have to record it one of these days, she looks very... special when this happens.

LOL! I've got a "special" girl too. She has trouble finding her way in AND out of the run and often gets left behind when the rest of the flock wanders away. She IS very pretty, sweet, and funny, so after getting hooked on "Glee" I renamed her Brittany, lol!
