**cliping wings need help**

I have mallards I dont clip them but can tell you how...Only 1 wing when they are fully feathered 8 weeks is when mine usually are and can fly..But you need to make sure if the feathers are not done they will bleed when clipping them..Take the one wing and feather it out you will see the brown feathers up to the colored ones count the first 3 longest and cut after that to the colored ones the cut feathers will be cut in half,,Then you should be good,,,
Heres a web site...

I've been wondering about the proper timing for annual clipping.

I don't want to cut 'blood feathers'; but then if I wait tilll the feathers are all the way mature, won't there be a time when the birds can fly around.

I'd like there NOT to be a 'window' each season when the birds can fly out of the pen--but the bleeding thing makes me think one should wait to clip until the feathers are all the way grown.

But then, I'm back to my problem again.

Thoughts?

btw, tx vicky!!!

Your birds can fly now mine could but it was until like 12 weeks before they got brave enough to really fly and not just flutter around the yard..You have to clip once a year after they molt..Is there a reason you dont want them to fly? I let mine they never leave the yard..Thier cage at night has netting so they cant fly out but can fly durning the day...

Oh you won't need to clip wings for quite some time.
You of course would never clip ducklings wings that are blood filled.
It's not like they are going to fly away anyway.
Even my adult Muscovies females if left unclipped only fly on rare ocassion
and just a few feet.
