It's not. But it reduces loss of birds - and therefore $ - from infection.
 
Sorry to spam your thread with a stupid question (as you can see, I'm a noob), why would you ever debeak a chicken? What purpose does it serve?
Most commercial companies debeak their hens to prevent them from pecking one another. Factory hens are kept in extremely close quarters, and would seriously injure each other probably if not debeaked. Other than that, there is no other reason. Most people (except commercial farms) do not debeak their hens.
