I have never raised leghorn chicks before. Mine are 2 months old now and was wondering if i will ever need to trim there beaks in the future.

Thanks

I have a little Serama hen that I occasionally need to trim the tip of her top beak a little. Its like trimming your fingernail. I use a pair of dog nail clippers.

I can understand if you have a chicken with a deformed beak. As a general rule, though, clipping the beak is completely unnecessary. It's not part of normal chicken care. I wouldn't even recommend toenail clipping unless you have a chicken with toenail issues. I've never done either.

I have only had chickens since fall and wasn't sure if that was part of taking care of a chicken.

Thanks for info

Generally if your chickens are on the ground you won't have a need to trim beaks or toenails.

If you keep them up in a cage (show chickens) then you will have to trim both.

Keep a brick or some large (fist sized or larger) rocks on your coop or run, they will drag their beaks over them and it helps trim them back naturally. Some folks here have a few birds that need to be carefully clipped or filed back occasionally, but as a rule, no. Enjoy your chicks!

The only thing I need to trim is my horses before I shoe them.BUT... sometimes I have to trim a roo or hens beak to stop them from killing each other.I dont do it Because it sounds like a good idea.or I read somewhere that so and so did it.sometimes its trim or cull. just my 2 cents,

If you're running a commercial operation, it is. They crowd them enough that the chickens will harm each other, otherwise.

This is one reason you'll read a lot on here about how important enough space is for them.
