Their toenails start curling under their feet and/or crossing the nails of the other toes and/or twisting. They can get long enough to grow into their feet.
Mine hens' didn't get long enough to bother them very much as best I could tell. It bothered me that their wicks were longer than I wanted their nails to be so I couldn't get them back to the length I wanted in two years of trying fairly hard. I wanted them in the ballpark of how long the nails of hens free ranging on dirt might be.
