Clipping their wings?

Can anyone tell me how to clip the feathers. How far down/up should I clip, what do I use to clip? Help. My chickens are venturing out to the neighbors yard, and this morning, around 7:00am, some wild animal came and ate one on my Rhode Island Reds. I need to try to keep them in my yard.

Before you clip wings, consider that this may actually be making your chickens more vulnerable to predatators, since flight is their only means of escape. Could whatever got your chicken in the neighbor's yard get into your yard too? If so, then clipping wings won't solve your problem.

Rather than clip wings, many people put netting or hardware cloth over the top of their run. This keeps their chickens in and keeps hawks out (solving two problems at the same time).

I have to agree with elmo. Netting is a great idea, and you can get deer netting at Home depot for next to nothing.

Every time I get a hen with clipped wings, I can't wait for it to molt so the feathers will grow back.

But if you want to clip, just take scissors and cut the last 5 to 7 feathers on their wings about half way down. Do it only on only one wing.
