My chickens are in a .3 acre paddock that is seperated from our main yard by a 5 foot fence. The last 2 weeks the barred rocks have been flying over the fence and foraging in the yard. I can't believe my dog hasn't done anything to them yet, but I don't want to keep tempting fate. Will clipping their wings keep them from getting over a 5 foot fence? Does this impact their ability to roost? The coop is a pastic shed and while we have lower roosts, ALL of the chickens go for the ones up top - probably about 6 feet up or so. Any other methods that I can do to keep them on their side of the fence?

(Why do the chickens choose to hop over the one side of the fence that puts them with the dogs? They could hop over the other 3 sides of the paddock fence and end up in dog-free fields!)

Thanks!

yes you can clip wings and that will help. also make sure that there arent any launching points in the yard - low branches or structures they can hop over.
and are you sure they are flying over the fence? I had a couple hems shimmy under the shed to get out. seemed impossible but i caught them in the act.
