Yesterday evening as we sat down for dinner, chaos erupted outside our window. It took sometime for us to notice, as we did not hear anything, but there was a grayish blob ontop of my new Serama rooster Little Ricky. I lunged for the back door, and bolted outside, thinking a mean gray hen I have was attacking him again. As the two birds rolled, I leapt off the deck to separate them.
The big gray bird let go, and in surprise I watched it fly away into the woods. That wasn't Lucy being a turd, it was a falcon! In horror I watched little Ricky flop around on the ground, squawking as he rolled about, acting like he was dying. There were feathers scattered, but he was unharmed other than a patch of baldness in the tail area. The falcon had just pounced on him, and was luckily interrupted from killing my poor little rooster. I ran around, checking on everyone to make sure the bird hadn't killed any others first. I found the Silkie rooster hiding in a nesting box.
Now, it is more crucial than ever for my new chicken run to be built so I have a safe place for my bantams! Until then I have the bantams in an A-frame, but they pick on little Ricky, so he has his own spot. I can't trust that they will be safe. Falcons are beautiful but deadly creatures!
