I just got my baby chicks 2 days ago. One of my baby chicks appear to have a bum leg. Then it was two bum legs. Not spraddle a leg. And not a slip tendon (I don't think). The legs are getting better.
My problem is in the mornings when this little one wakes up her eyes stay shut. Well, the 1st day was only 1 eye. Today it's 2 eyes. I use warm water to try and get them open and they do open eventually. I don't see visible crust but I might get one little piece of goop that comes out when it opens. That's probably just because they were swollen shut. I would like to give something just to be safe as I have 21 chicks and she is my favorite. What antibiotic can I get at the store and would you suggest? I'd rather do something than nothing.

Shes still the same. Well more energy at the moment. I bought Tylan just not sure if I should give it orally or injected. I called over 15 vets today. No one does chickens. Smh.
I'm so sorry. Have you tried doing a search on Google "Avian veterinarian ___(insert your general area here)___"? That's the only way I found an Avian vet. It was still not local by any means, but that will give you an idea. Do you have any other animals like a dog or cat, that sees a vet on a regular basis? Sometimes if you explain that you're not asking them to take the chick on as a patient but you need a fecal float ran so you can treat her, they may be willing to run the fecal float.

^^^ You can look for an Avian Vet using this link too. ^^^
I hope this helps

Unfortunately there are times when a hatchling has an issue that's obvious to the untrained eye, they could have things going on internally that we can't see or fix. I really hope that's not the case with your little one. Does she have a name? Have you given her nutridrench or some kind of nutritional boost? Maybe even something as simple as sugar water. Was she shipped to you or purchased from somewhere? Shipping can be tough on chicks. You and your chick will be in my thoughts and 🙏🏻

Hi. Make sure she eats and drinks enough. You don't want her weaker. I would me myself IMO treat for cocci. That would be the first things chicks get in trouble with. Without food and water intake they can get too weak to walk. And cocci may possibly attack a vulnerable chick even if they don't have the typical signs and symptoms. Or if they're on medicated feed. They can still get cocci because they are weak. Tube feeding may be necessary.

We on BYC are the experts , not Dr. Google. Tube feeding expert, Casportpony. Sick chicks, Eggcessive. Not to Exclude any other capable member.

It does turn out that m0st vets don't have the knowledge base that BYC does. You may find a few that do. I think I would treat for cocci before I would go on to Tylan. It's more probable that cocci is there in sick new chicks. Even with preventatives and not seeing blood stool. All I look for is a chick that is acting sick, or not like the others. That does it for me.

Agreed!

If you start treating for coccidiosis, make sure that you don't give nutridrench or anything similar that gives extra vitamins, minerals, pro and pre biotics, etc. You don't want to give them thiamine when that's what coccidia feeds on and what Corid blocks to kill the protozoa.
