My flock of 11 showed signs of clostridium perfringens, droppings were water with a few bits of green. It started with 1 hen, but by the time I figured out what it was several more were infected.

I have been giving them Tylan 200 orally twice a day.

They have completed a 5 day course and are showing improvement. Their droppings are becoming normal, but still not completely normal.

Should I continue the Tylan 200 until the droppings are normal, or can I stop it now and the improvement will continue? I am worried about having to start all over, and also that the bacteria will become resistant.

I'd appreciate any input! :bow

Per @casportpony I've been giving them Tylan [email protected]/lb. 3x daily.

First signs noticed on Jun 7. This photo is from that date. I saw a hen poop a waterfall and was shocked. June 7.JPG

I crated the legbar hen that started all of this on June 11 and this is what I saw in the morning.

This was on the ramp up to the roosts on June 11

The tylan 200 was started on Jun 12.

I do not have a photo of the droppings today. I haven't seen anything like these diarrhea photos. Last night was last dose in the 5 day course.
Fecal tests were not done. The flock was just finished with worming using Safeguard.

It is always best to confirm what you are treating with a lab test, if available, so you are not using antibiotics unnecessarily. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea, so best to give them probiotics if not already in their feed, or some probiotic plain yogurt with cultures mixed in feed. Probios is usually available at most feed stores. Tylan is normally used for 5 full days, but I would also check with @casportpony or PM her.

This is a tough call. I know that Tylan is usually only given for 5 days, but the time my vet had me treat a possible outbreak of clostridium perfringens with metronidazole she told me to give it for several weeks. I'm not suggesting that you give the Tylan for weeks, but maybe try another day or two?

Thanks, Kathy! I will continue it for a few more days. Do you think it will hurt to switch to the metronidazole? This 3 times a day stuff is killing me!

It would be twice a day for several weeks and it's banned or use in all food animals. Are any of them pooping normally? If not, may I suggest that you get a new bag of feed and try that?
