Hey, BYC!
I'm Neona and I'm a first-time chicken keeper in Northern California. I'm a long time BYC lurker who was finally tempted to join after reading the Sasquatch thread. The moment my fiance and I moved into this house I knew I wanted chickens. We spent last fall preparing the yard and building a run and coop. We picked up our first two chicks the 1st of May. We now currently have six pullets of various breeding and we're hooked! We are already planning a second flock of dedicated meat birds for next spring. If/when we expand I hope to be able to sell eggs; after the arduous process of researching California regulations. I'm computer nerd by trade, so I've been designing and building a low-key "smart" coop for the layers to make everyone's life easier. I also hope to make a thread about it when I repeat it for the second flock. It's not really pretty or well documented right now - BYC might be the motivation to change that.
Our Buff Orpington, Marigold, was the first to start laying about three weeks ago. She's been laying regularly every other day and I'm a proud chicken Ma'ma. My Americauna*, Willow, of the same age is slow to display any signs but I know it may be 30wks until she's ready. *Reportedly; may be an EE. The salesman was John Snow incarnate and didn't know anything.
Now we're just waiting on her; the olive egger, cream legbar, welsummer and barnevelder!
