Hi Everyone!

I'm new to raising chickens, from chicks, that is. I have a Buff Orphington hen that I rescued last year. So, this year I am going to buy some baby chicks and could us all the advice you guys can offer!

I ordered Salmon Faverolle from a local breeder and would like to know more about them. Any quirks they may have and any advice on breeding them.

Also, how many breeds is too many? I looove so many different breeds and would like to get a variety, but I'm not sure where to start or how many to get of each breed!

Which is better, buyinh from a breeder or a hatchery? What's the difference? How much is too much for chickens?

If you can answer any of my question it will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

You can check the Chicken Breeds section of the Forum for a Faverolle thread

How many breeds? Really as many as you like. If you are looking for hens to keep for laying and pleasure, then hatchery chicks are fine. If you plan to do breeding or showing, you should look for birds from a reputable breeder.

Google the Henderson chicken chart for good breeds info.

I did buy four chicks from Tractor Supply. One pair is almost five weeks and the other pair is almost three weeks. I'll be getting more, but I'm just not sure what breeds would be the best to get. There are soo many out there and they're all so pretty!

I'm on the fence about showing my (future) chicks. What are the benifets for showing them? Where would you show them at?
