My 1 yr old brahma, Lady was acting a little punky so I took a good look at her yesterday. She appeared to have mites/lice so I dusted her with the Poultry dust, dusted the coop, changed the shavings - new food, fresh water. The works. First thing this morning I looked to see if she was feeling better and when I picked her up clear water came out of her beak!

I started to really give her the once over and noticed what looked like clumps of mites eggs on the base of some of her tail feathers. I decided to give her a bath in Adams flea/tick shampoo just to be safe, but it did appear the lice I was seeing were dead, just stuck in her feathers. I cut the feathers off that had the clumps on them too. After the bath (which she seemed to enjoy) I had her bundled in a towel and more of the clear water came out of her beak. I took her outside and tilted her forward, when more came out, with "bits" of scrambled egg and other asst things she's eaten. Problem is, I haven't given her egg in 2 days!!

What do I do now?? Should I massage her crop? Do I NOT massage her crop?? Do I flush her somehow? Now I'm thinking this may have been what my last hen died from, starvation.

Can someone please help me!!!

I would also like to add that I have her inside in a dog kennel. She had diarrhea a minute ago, with a little green in it. Means she's not absorbing any nutrients right?

I have not seen her lay an egg for several days either, but felt her belly and she feels like the other chickens do.

Please help me!

ACK! I've been gone all day and there are no answers! Should I be withholding food? Should I be fixing her something special?

Please help me!

I wish I had something to tell you--but I'm too new to have good ideas. If she's compromised enough to have significant mites...I'd say treat for the mites with ivermectin, keep her isolated, warm and calm; give her a nice dish of mash and grit, maybe? That one I'm not at all sure on. Perhaps make them available in separate dishes?

Electrolytes in her water won't hurt, I know that....

Good luck!

A crop massage probably won't hurt. Does her crop seem hard?

I fear she may have had the bugs too long and may die from the overload. Bugs can kill birds very quickly. Unfortunately, all you can do is watch and wait. Try to get her eating scrambled eggs and drinking water. I think some dosing with Poly-Vi-Sol would be helpful at this point.

I hope this helps. Good luck.
