I do not believe he was trying to argue, just state some problems overall with what the government did. Also he did not take into account inflation from printing money for the cash for clunkers deal.
In some people's case it probably looked like roses. But for most people who actually have clunkers it is because they could not afford a new car in the first place. Not a wise move to borrow more money when strapped and then get kicked in the hind end on taxes.
We also found out today that we have to pay taxes on payouts from our insurance benefits. When one of us gets sick the insurance gives us money to live on until we return to work. This normally has been tax free. My wife got a payment of $1000 that she has to pay taxes on, so much for not raising taxes on people making under $250,000.
