C'mon girls - Lay in the nest boxes !

I now build my coops with no nesting boxes, where ever they lay I build a box there. Doesn't always work out when they lay them under a roosting bar in a pile of poop. silly birds. (sometimes I just build a poop board with a nesting box beneath if they get stubborn but I am not someone who likes poop boards in general)

Being a cheapskate I just use another egg I planned on discarding... warning... if you use a failed hatching egg it may break and stink! and if you use the same color egg you might collect the wrong one! Being cheap comes with its risks. I did find a golfball when clearing land one time and I use it, it was free.

You can make a trip to your local grocery stores and search for milk crates in the back alley and use them as nesting boxes!

I rarely find milk crates that I can take legally but I use cardboard boxes... yep the chickens tear them up but they are free and easy to replace. I really only build something to hold them in place with discarded pallet wood. After the chickens poop on the top of them and wear them out I replace them with another free box, maybe some minor adjustments to the pallet wood that holds then in place. I tear up the old boxes a bit and drop them in the chicken runs and come spring when I collect the compostable materials for my giant compost pile you can't even tell there was cardboard in there.
