coal, can this be used as grit?

Quote:
This is mining coal from Kentucky and West Virginia coal mines. Some drops off the trains when they rumble by and then the rain washes it down the hill into our yard. I will have to see how much is on opposite side of the yard (from the train) to know what we should do.

Thanks for all the info. I will try to remember to let you all know what happens later.

Hubby is an EMT and said that Bitamus coal is poisonous to animals, humans and bad for drinking water.

Chickens will know what they need. If you can get yourself some fine gravel from a riverbed, that would be excellent.

So do you think they will just ignore the stuff? I mean there is no way we can get all this out of our yard, our house has been here since the early 30's. I think the coal is what helps our garden grow so well, when the kudzu doesn't kill everything.

Chickens, even chicks seem to figure out quick what is good to eat and what isn't. I have a feeling that yours will too. I have watched newly hatched chicks accidently pecking at some poop and they know instantly that is isn't good. Shake their heads and almost make this face

Good luck
