Just wanted to share that we were able to get a new "Urban Agriculture" ordinance passed in Lincoln City OR which includes the keeping of up to 5 domestic poultry, as well as provisions for keeping specified small numbers of other livestock type animals (see the ordinance on the city website for details). www.lincolncity.org
Basically the ordinance also makes provisions for community and market gardens in the city, in all zones, as well as the animals. This is a very small town but totally dependent on tourism, so some people were not keen on having this changed... we were able to get the ordinance written and submitted by sympathetic staff in the planning dept. Then we personally "lobbied" our city councilman, who we know pretty well, and wrote letters to the planning and city councils. There was coverage in the local paper, and little opposition. It may have helped that a very contentious ordinance on another issue was being considered at the time... but success!
We had built our coop and brought home 5 Black Australorps before the council voted, believing if it didn't pass it was worth some civil disobedience. Hope this story helps and inspires someone else to give it a shot in their own city.
