ESA chickens, city governments and housing provider

We haven't decided where we're relocating as of yet... the best approach for minimum friction.
:welcome Welcome I would be looking at places that are chicken law friendly. Even if you can manipulate the system, it won't make your neighbors happy or any of the members of town that have made the laws in their area not allowing chickens. I don't think that is how I would want to start out in a community, sounds like continues problems. Being new to a community and forcing your ways on others that have lived and made the laws in their areas for many years, doesn't sound like a good way to be welcomed into a new community.

We're looking at .5 - 1 acre properties... neighbors could easily never know, and certainly would not be disturbed.
The process of deciding where to move has been arduous and fraught with conflict in our home, adding this as a criteria... my husband would literally lose his mind.
I'm less concerned about the towns, as most that are on the list allow chickens... it's the dang HOA's... I would prefer to buy outside of an HOA, but that eliminates 99% of the homes in the areas we're looking at.
Somethings gotta give.

Hey everyone! I am new to the website, but I think I have valuable information regarding ESA letters, chickens and city ordinances. This is not an attempt to circumvent the law by claiming fraudulent use of an ESA animal. I do not condone that in anyway shape or form. I am a disabled veteran, and I suffer from various physical and mental impairments one of them being PTSD. After several years of battling depression, anxiety and constantly fighting off boredom due to not being able to work, and simply sitting around and wasting away, someone told me I should get some chickens. It’s the day that is changing my life. I quickly fell in love with the simplicity and the ease in which they go about their day, getting lost in my thoughts while watching them, go about there chicken day. Having something to care for and having purpose again. And my mood has improved. It was shortly afterwards that the city was alerted and my chickens were threatened to be taken away. No way Jose. Using my super power of OCD and the desire to keep my chickens. I quickly focused my attention on changing the ordinance. No success. The city remained steadfast, so I decided to play my ace up the sleeve. I had already obtained an ESA letter from my therapist, had all my “ducks“ (pun intended) in a row. I presented my request for a variance to the city Council and was immediately approved without question. My point being, if you are legitimately seeking an ESA chicken variance then here is the resource I found most valuable. Feel free to reach out with any other questions. Thanks chicken lovers.!

I know this is an older thread but seriously considering if it is reasonable to get my 3 ducks called service animals for my son who they greatly help with his anxiety. Just spending time quietly sitting with them calms him, and he would be heartbroken if we need to get rid of them because we aren’t “zoned agriculture”. Advice for how to proceed? A variance is so costly, I need to find the best way to fight this.

Ducks can't be "service" animals.

I'm fighting my village to keep my flock of chickens and roosters and I have an emotional support letter and they are still trying to make me get rid of them. I don't know what to do now or who to talk too.

ESA was not intended to exempt one from generally applicable zoning law in order to maintain a flock (or herd, or whatever) of livestock. The substantial burden is yours to overcome. and courtesy proliferation of internet ESA certificates, the documentation needed to establish both a non-evident disability and the creature(s) specific fit to your condition is more demanding than it once was.

Hi Harris,

Thank you so much for your post and also for the link! can I ask if your city council tried to limit the number of chickens you had or if your doctor specifically wrote chickens and how many on your letter? Thank you!

Hi, Can I ask if your village allowed chickens at all and what happened? I'm so sorry to hear they didn't consider the emotional support letter at all (is that even legal?)
