I think I see a little blood in some droppings. Nothing major at this point and they all seem fine. I am not feeding medicated starter, at least I don't believe I am. I have seen Corid mentioned on here and was wondering if that is something that is easy to find. And should I start treatment now or wait a few days.
sulmet it is cheaper than corid. mix 2 tablespoons in a gallon of water for the first 2 days then 1 tablespoon in a gallon for 5 more days. ACV is also good for them
I would put them on medicated starter. It has Amprolium in it and it works very well. Sulmet is a Sulfa drug and can have long lasting affects and does build up in the system. I would not try that on very young chicks until you have exhausted the other more gentle medications. It will say medicated on the lable If you can't find it you can usually buy Amprolium from any of the mail order vet supply houses. I use First State Vet supply. It is available at many feed stores as well.
Some people have used powdered milk to change the PH in the intestines and that sometimes will knock out Early stage Cocci. Yogurt mixed with the feed helps as well.
I agree with Jaynie about the Sulmet. Unless they've had access to the ground, it may not be cocci anyway. Corid is much better and safer to use if you medicate them.
Thank you all for your replies. It is probably not Cocci because they have not been out of the brooder at all. They had paper towels down for the first couple of days and then I put pine shavings in. I only saw a small spec of what I believe was blood. Just want to cover my bases. My boys have named the chicks and are already quite attached. We lost both of our dogs in the last 8 months, so don't want them to lose anymore pets!
I went to my local feed supply and the owner suggested vitamins and electrolytes in their water. I also asked about the starter feed and it contains an all natural product instead of antibiotic. I am using the Poulin Grain Starter crumbles. DH is going to pick up some plain yogurt on his way home from work and I will also give some of that. If I get a chance I might try to get some Corid tomorrow just in case.
