Cocci or malnutrition?

2x @Eggcessive, try getting a poop sample to the Vet :hugs
Thank you! I tried yesterday again and they won’t do one for us because they don’t see chickens. I did reach out to another vet that seems like they may do birds so fingers crossed they can and it’s not too expensive.

On another note I think she may have a slightly impacted crop. This morning it wasn’t fully empty and I notice there was a smaller hard ball. I didn’t want to feel around too much but I’m looking into that on other threads here

Any suggestions would be welcome!!

Please go back to post 6 by Wyorp Rock and at the bottom she has 2 articles on crop treatment listed.
Thank you. I was able to read through those articles. And may try the oil later today.

She had an even bloodier poop this morning after eating. With mucus. Seems like over night and towards the end of the day her poops are more normal looking. She is almost totally normal in the morning, eats drinks and runs around happy with the flock, but after her breakfast meal she noticeably gets sleepy and uncomfortable-just stands and puffs for hours. It’s almost like she is having trouble digesting especially after bigger meals. The rest of the day she is like this till evening. She perks up a little, eats a bit more than straight to sleep again. She still poops so I know something is going through, but it’s clear something is wrong because of her behavior and the blood which wasn’t even appearing till we started with Corid. Have two more days left of the Corid treatment so will finish that anyways.

I found a vet that will take her in today so we are going to pay for an exam and fecal float. We honestly can’t spend much more so my hope is that we can diagnose the problem and be able to treat it at home. Hope they can see what’s happening from the stool and perhaps tell if there is any crop impaction from the exam.

Will update here with the results!

Let us know what the vet has to say. Some vets will use Albon or sulfadimethoxine, a sulfa antibiotic for coccidiosis. SMZ-TMP is another sulfa antibiotic.
Just getting home from the vet.

No cocci or other infection present in stool but vet said to continue treatment of corid till course is finished.

LOTS of yeast present which they gave us nystatin to treat. I am going to syringe feed her the medicine 2x per day. She said that may or may not be secondary to the crop emptying issues but we will treat that first and see if her crop starts clearing better.

They are showing me how to give her water and formula through tube too. I’m going to weight to give it till after the corid treatment since it has vitamin b in it. And just try to keep her eating yummy food!

Happy to have an answer!

Will keep updating with her progress!

Following your thread as I’m having the same issues with a 3-4 week chick. We tried Corid in the water at first but a drench is what’s showing signs of improvement. As to your thoughts about malnutrition due to the cocci- I had the same thought and today I am getting some Nutri Drench from our TSC and will be trying that.

While using Corid, do not give Nutri Drench or any other supplement that contains thiamin.

Corid works by blocking thiamin, and giving extra thiamin makes that ineffective.

Finish the Corid treatment first, for the correct number of days, and then you can try the Nutri Drench. (If you put Nutri Drench in the water, I would provide a source of plain water as well, so the chick has a choice.)

Thanks for the heads up! None of my local stores had NutriDrench (even the one that said it 🙄) so I'll be finished with the Corid before we get started on the next phase.
