RIR about 1.5 years old, was exhibiting Cocci symptoms of being puffed up, hunched over, and eyes squinting with pain as well as a poopy vent that looked really raw as she has been laying very very bloody eggs (on shells). So, I treated all 12 with Corid 1 tsp per gallon for 5 days and she seemed back to perfect health. But then again this weekend she was puffed up, hunched over and in pain again still with a raw poopy vent. Do I re-treat with Corid or is it time to go to the vet? Thanks for any and all suggestions...

The usual symptom of cocci is bloody poop. You don't describe that symptom. It sounds as if your hen may have some type of laying issue, perhaps prolapse or some internal malfunction causing her pain and bleeding when she is laying. Is she being pecked in the vent area? Until someone with more experience than I comes along, you might want to search on prolapse and see if the symptoms described match what your hen is experiencing. Best of luck to you.

After a month or so of back and forth, we lost the RIR this morning. The other 11 look to be in fine health, but I'm worried it could spread. I did notice one of my EE's hunched and squinty towards dusk this evening, but she was also roosting, so maybe I'm being paranoid. I've also been noticing big watery, messy poops out in the run

Again, her symptoms were hunched over, squinting, breathing heavy, lethargic, pooped-up behind. No blood in her poop, or any of my bird's poop.

Any ideas?

Cocci does NOT have to show bloody poop. That's is the biggest misconception and causes folks to lose birds to coccidiosis. Dr. Peter Brown, Poultry science, recommends treating your entire flock with Corid (Amprolium) once a month for 2 days. This helps to keep the colony count of cocci down to a level that the birds can tolerate.

When in doubt...treat for cocci for 5 days. He also recommends NOT using Sulmet as it is very hard on the birds kidneys. His recommendation is sulfadimethoxine.
