Cocci Question

Thanks, Iluvmychickens. I'm going to call my vet back tomrrow and see if she has the Albon there and can treat my chickens. I hope yours get better. Keep me posted!

I got Hattie home Friday evening and she is doing really good. All 10 others are taking the Albon good. I assume her case of Cocci was caught early. Her bloody poo has almost stopped and either I imagine it or she has already put on a little weight.

Did you get Albon for your kids?

No. My vet was closed today. Did you get yours from the vet or from a store? What form was it in (tablet, liquid)? How and how much was administerd per chicken?

I got it from the Vet. I had to weigh each chicken at the house then call her with the weight. She then converted the pounds to grams and gave me a list of each chickens name-weight and amount of albon to administer 2 times a day for one week.

It is a liquid med that I inject down the throat with a very small sryinge. What a challange that was the 1st time.

My chickens weigh from 3 pounds down to 3 ounces. Mine are all Bantams. The 3 oz. are 1 week old BO's she said I should treat just to be on the safe side.

Was it expensive? I went to Tractor Supply yesterday and looked at Sulmet. It was almost $60.00. My vet said even without a fecal check, it'd wouldn't be a bad idea to treat them for Cocci anyway.
Did your chickens have runny poo one minute and then normal the next? That's what's been happening with mine.

Seriously? I got a liquid sulmet for poultry and it was only 12 bucks a few years ago.

If the chickens are getting treats and anything other than their regular feed, they to have a tendency to get a few loose droppings. However, I am not a fan of treating if you don't know if there is an infestation. In addition, it could be worms, which sulmet won't do anything for. Plus, you do have to treat, there is a withdrawl time for the meds as they can make some people sick if th eggs are eaten.

I stopped giving my chickens treats and their poos stayed the same. So, I have given them very limited treats, like veggies and they get plain organic yogurt daily. I've had fecals done and they showed no signs of parasites. I did mix some wormgaurd plus w/flax seed in their layer pellets today, just as a precaution. As far as the eggs, I may be the only chicken owner who barely eats their chickens eggs. So it I wouldn't be sad if I had to toss the eggs. Anyway, I'd rather have healthy, happy pet chickens
