I brought home 3 Buckeye chicks from my local feed store yesterday and one of them is not doing as well as the others. As soon as I took them out of the box she seemed off. It seems to me that something is just not right. I've been observing her and noticed that she sits almost all of the time. She is eating and drinking, taking trips to the water and sits in front of the food but other than that she doesn't wander much like the others.
She seems to have a limp and hold one foot higher than the other. The leg she holds up looks slightly swollen to me. I initially thought it was a slipped tendon but I watched a cocci video on YouTube that another user posted on a thread here and she has the same behaviors where she lays down on her side and sort of stretches one leg and wing out (the one she limps on). She does this as she goes to sit and it seems like the leg sort of quickly pops out and then she stands up. This confuses me. Would a chick with a slipped tendon stretch the same way?
around the 2:15 mark. When she is sitting she constantly peeps or cries out and closes her eyes. I am going to try to capture this on video and post. They are inside and under a lamp, their brooder box is dry, it's not too hot or cold for the other two chicks who are very active. She has been like this since I took them out of the box. So perhaps the ride home caused a slipped tendon? Could the cardboard have been too splippery and cause injury? I have noticed that the foot she limps on sometimes has curled toes. If its cocci would the other chicks show signs soon?
They are on chick starter. Which I believe is medicated. The feed store is closed today so I cannot call to confirm but I believe they told me it is medicated with my first batch of chicks. And their water has vitamins and electrolytes mixed in.
I feel so terrible hearing her cry out, she sounds frantic and she only stops when she is sleeping or I hold her in my lap in a comfortable position sort of like a swaddle. Poor thing. Of course, she's the only one we named so far! Any help/advice greatly appreciated as always!
