Cocci Treatment in Australia - Aussies please help!

My local feed store doesn't supply the types of coccidiosis treatments that are most commonly used in the states.. i live in australia and cant seem to find those here. I have however found "Avian Science Sulfa Remedy" that contains 64.9mg/ml sulfadimidine as the sodium salt treatment but am not sure if it can be used to treat my chicks. They are 2 weeks old.

It says that its not to be used on food producing birds but i thought maybe that would mean not to be used on birds that are producing foods... rather than my chicks that wont start producing for ages yet?
Does that make sense to anyone? Please let me know if this can be done or not...

from what I have heard sulfa drugs are bad for humans so they cant be all that good for chickens

hmm, well i think this type of treatment is primarily used for budgies, canaries, finches and even larger birds like parrots.. so i thought it might be possible.

I read your post and pulled out my bottle of Sulmet. It says Sulfamethazine Sodium 12.5%. It does say not to use on chickens producing eggs for human consumption. I believe this is because some people have reactions to Sulfa drugs.

I'm not an expert, by any means. But if your chicks have cocci, you have to do something, or they will probably die. If that is what you have available in Australia, you have to consider using it. I say consider using it, because I can't really recommend that you use it. I've never used it. But if your chicks have a deadly condition anyway...

Maybe you could change the title of your thread to Cocci Treatment in Australia - Aussies please help! Then maybe someone there would see it and respond. It's such a common malady, I'm sure that someone knows what you should do.

Thank you for your opinion... glad to know that sulmet also says something similar about not giving it to producing chickens.
Im not 100% sure that my new chicks have the disease yet and am monitoring there stool. I just have this sulfa treatment on hand just in case.

the turkey guy says to use sulmet - i used corid...and i lost 4 poults.

i believe there is a meat and egg withholding period for chickens - but that just means dont eat their eggs or slaughter them...so your little ones should be ok

i would SPRING TO ACTION at once... what we found out was that our 'wait and see' was a bad mistake. once they show signs you only have a day (couple days?) to do something. we found out that ours were too far gone to help.

what we saw was:

* huddling behavior - they were kind of droopy and hanging out in a corner away from everyone else. holding their heads low to their bodies
* not perky and kind of slow
* the dreaded yellow poops - which initially showed as having a bit of blood - but not too much. so our reaction was - humm.. we should wait and see

the hard thing was that all of them showed signs of improvement - then we found them dead the next morning which is just heartbreaking.
