I treated my hens w/safeguard then Corid. Only 1of 6 hens was showing signs of cocci but kno all had it. I've since administered the 3 day vitamin reg. and yogurt. Everyone looks great. Eating and drinking normal but they are not gaining any weight and even looks like they may still be loosing weight! They are all laying normal. Several have runny stool but could be the heat. Am very concerned. Any suggestions?

How old are they? Worms may be a problem, and SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer is a very good, safe wormer. Dose is 1/2 ml for most full size chickens, and repeat in 10 days. Egg withdrawal is total of 24 days, or 14 days after last dose. If diarrhea persists after that, you might want to treat or have a stool sample checked for enteritis which is caused by clostridium perfringens in the soil. That is treated with an antibiotic such as oxytetracycline, doxycycline, amoxicillin, penicillin, or bacitracin.

Whoops, I see you treated for worms already.

I have not done the repeat on the safeguard yet. They are due. My hens are between 8-9 months old. The hen w-the symptoms turned around in half a day. How long before they start gaining? I have duramycin/tetracycline on hand.

If they have had cocci or worms, that can cause intestinal damage. To boost their weight, you could cut out any treats, give 20-24 % protein for a couple of weeks, and then go back down to what they are on now, and supplement with some scrambled soft eggs, low salt ground meat or tuna, and some good quality dry cat food. Probios powder in the water may cause less problems than yogurt, and can be used 2-3 days a week for life to keep the gut bacteria healthy. In hot weather chickens may eat less and drink tons of water, which in turn may cause loose stools.

I am concerned about the clostridium but have read where the stool is an " off" color and these are not. They are "regular" in color just very watery.

Yes, I cut out all treats during the treatment when I read they weren't to have any. I have given them watermelon. How much yogurt should I be giving them? I might be over doing it. Not familiar with probiotic powder???

Yogurt has too much calcium and may cause either diarrhea or constipation in chicks if given too much. A small amount of buttermilk or tiny amount of yogurt is best--they just need the bacteria in the yogurt. Buttermilk is very nutritional and can be mixed a little in feed. Probios Dispersible Powder is very good to use for probiotics, and a little goes a long way. Here is a link, and many farm stores carry it: http://www.jefferspet.com/probios-dispersible-powder/p/16568/

k , thanks. Appreciate the info. Does anyone have a clue as to how long it takes the hens to start putting on weight after Corid treatment? I'd love to have a base line to compare too. Assuming all things being successful. Thank you in advance, ya'll are the bomb.. Very appreciative to you for sharing the knowledge!
