Wow very informative but I only have a couple of issues, from the incubator, my chicks went into a wooden box with a heating light. They are in the same room as me so that I can watch them. they get cleaned everyday. the one that is sick is in a separate box by herself but close to hear the others. So My guess is as good as yours. Unless it was on the wooden box which was outside originally, I couldn't say how she got it if she got it from my place. I keep there place very dry because they are sooo messy.

I just thought of something could it possible be from broccolli? I did give them all broccolli one night and it had a horrible smell to it the next day. I'm wondering if the broccolli was bad because that was about the same time she started to get sick?

OH MY GOD CAN SOMEONE HELP ME, my little chick that I thought was getting better just took a HUGE downfall. I was giving her some diluted water with sulmet and all of a sudden she was figthing me to take another drink. So I stopped, next thing I see, she's gasping for air. It made me cry.. So I put her in her box and she's shaking her head and doing circles and gasping. She puts her head down and out came fluid.

Isn't there anything I can do for her. I can't bare to see this, right now she's in a corner of the box with her head held to one side, she's not gasping but is doing this little itty bitty chirping. She's hurting my feelings. I thought things were going good, I thought she was improving, now I can see she's not going to make it unless someone knows of something else I can do for her..

She probably won't make it. Not much you can do but make her comfortable. So sorry. It is possible she had cocci but also possible there is some deformation in the throat. Chicks are so vulnerable. I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with this.

Hang in there, if you are a new chicken owner, you will soon see this is a common experience at least one or two a year is lost to unknown illnesses. I know it doesn't help to know that but alas, it may help you know it was beyond your control.

She's making me cry just watching her. She seemed like, she was really trying to fight this thing, and I was really trying to help her. But now alls I can do is sit here watch her and cry. Should I continue to keep tring to give her the Sulmet? i have been giving it to her every hour. perhaps I'm giving it to her to much?

hows the chick this morning? how are you giving the sulmet sometimes they can get water into their lungs if using something to force the liquid down their throats.. I hope she is better this morning..

Well believe it or not she's still alive, she was in her food dish this morning, she pooped twice and her poop looked absolutely normal. She's not walking at all, just sleeps all the time. Breaks my heart to see her like this but I don't know what else to do. Last night I would wake her to get her to walk some and she would just chirp chirp chirp almost like she's in pain. I notice between her legs seemed to be much larger then the other chicks, so Im wondering if she has some sort of swelling or infection or something going on down there, it would make sense, because when she does walk she's bow legged. When I get her up to walk she just falls over and when she falls over she can't get up. her legs move but not enough to lift herself up. Are we absolutely sure there's nothing I can do for her. She seems to really be struggling to stay alive..

When I give her the sulmet I have dropper and I don't have to do much, I touch her beak and she sticks her beak into the hole of the dropper and drinks on her own. It takes about 5 minutes of doing this but she does it by herself..

Sounds like something else going on other than cocci. I do wish I had an answer for you...it's so hard to see them like this. You might try switching to a heavier duty antibiotic, assuming it is an infection of some sort. Most of what we do is assume with them, isn't it. Saying a little prayer for her and you...

my heart goes out to you. We have all been there. We all know how you feel, and feel helpless as any mother would feel. I hope the little babe pulls through. I will say a prayer for you both as well.

are you aklso giving her vitamins[poly-vi-sol] with out iron? I wouldn't mix it with the sulmet but into other water and give it to her a couple times a day.. that might give her a boost..
