I have had chickens for 8 years and haven't ever had to deal with any coccidosis. So, I am worried. I spotted a poop with a bit of blood in it today and took it to the vet for a fecal which confirmed coccidia.
The chicken coop that I found it in were born in April 09. Breeds are barred rock, turken and EE. There are 4 of them.
I clean coops every day (not a complete litter change of course, just scooping poop). They are on dry pine shavings in coop and have access to a large 200 sq ft run for the 4 of them. They have been on medicated chick starter since day 1 and still are. They also get sunflower seeds (shell-less) and fruit as treats.
They are still active, eating well and drinking. No ruffled feathers, combs and wattles look good.
I have started them, and the other 4 coops that have older chickens (coop2-two 10 mos olds, coop3-two 1 1/2 yr old and three 6 months old and coop4-four 8 year old bantams). They all have their own runs with grass and some dirt and are allowed to free-range together a couple hrs a day.
Tonite, I started all of them on Corid 9.6% solution 1 tsp in gallon of water and am giving them a mash mix with corid per Glenda's advice in a previous posting for first 2 days. They will get the Corid in water for 5-7 days.
I will give probiotics AFTER that, right?
Am I missing anything? I read on First State Vet to then give Sulmet or sulfamethodine (sp?) in 21 days. Peter Brown also mentioned something called 3-nitro-w with the corid, but I don't know what that is.
Do you all think I caught it soon enough? Anything else to do? I am really worried about my chickens!
