hello,

I'm a first time chicken owner.

I have ten chickens. 2 barred rocks, 2 ISA browns, 2 Buff Orps, 2 Sex Links, and 2 Australorps. They are 24 weeks old and they started pooping runny blood on Thursday morning. We went out and got Corid and started it in their water thursday at around noon. My girls are still looking lethargic and pale and this morning there was still runny blood on the poop deck (as we call it). We also only got 2 eggs today where we usually average 8-9.

The coop has a high roost and a poop catcher that we clean out daily. We hang their water from a bucket (in the run) with nipples underneath so it stays clean and we hang their food (in the run). We get a LOT of birds in our yard and let the chickens free range in the yard for an hour or more per day, so I assume that's where they got it. The run is in a shady part of our yard and it's been rainy and humid for weeks, so I'm sure that played a role.

I'm just really concerned because they don't look much better. Should I be administering undiluted corid with a syringe? Anyone have more experience with this?

Thank you!

What dilution of Corid are you using?
1/3 teaspoon of Corid powder per gallon for 5 days for preventative
3/4 teaspoon per gallon for 5 days for moderate
1 1/2 teaspoons per gallon for 5 days for severe followed by 1/3 t per gal for 5 days.
Follow this by using a vitamin with Thiamine in their water for a few days.
It can take several days to see improvement, especially if they have a severe infestation which is what this sounds like.

We used the 9.6% oral solution. 9.5 mls per gallon in their water. They have a 2 gallon bucket and I've refilled it twice with this solution.

Hi @TillieMama :frow Welcome To BYC

What type of food/treats are you giving - are you adding any supplement to their feed or water in addition to the Corid (like vitamins/electrolytes)?
Any photos of the poop?

I would use the "severe outbreak" dosage of Corid which is 1 1/2 teaspoons Corid powder per gallon of water or 2 teaspoons of 9.6% Corid liquid per gallon gallon of water.
Make sure the Corid water is the only source of water available. Make a fresh batch everyday.

They may not be drinking enough of the solution. You can direct dose them in addition to the Corid water.
Direct dose for liquid Corid give 0.1 ml per pound orally once a day, direct dosage for Corid powder mix 1/2 teaspoon powder with 2 teaspoons water and give 0.34 ml per pound orally once day.

Once you have finished the course of Corid (5-7days). Offer poultry vitamins and probiotics for a few days.

I've attached a photo of their"poop deck." Yesterday it looked like a massacre. Today, there was less, but still watery and runny. (Photo is from today).

I am letting them out into the yard today but their only water is the medicated water. I searched the yard and don't see any puddles or anything that they could drink from.

I also gave them each a dose of the undiluted corid like you suggested. It seems like two of my chickens (the worse ones yesterday) look a little better today. One other looks a little worse.

Thank you so much for your replies. I appreciate it.

Do the best you can to keep them drinking. Hopefully getting a couple of days of a direct dosage will help as well.

Be sure to avoid giving extra vitamins or supplements that contain B1 (thiamine) during the Corid treatment. Sometimes excessive amount of B1 contain cancel the Corid.
