Melody-1.5 year old hen is on day 3 of treatment with Corid and is finally eating well and looking perky, but I haven't seen her drink on her own yet. I read it's fine to let them rejoin the flock when they're feeling better, but I want to see her drinking on her own first. How long do I wait before giving her water through a syringe again if I don't see her drinking?

Hi,

Since Melody is eating, that's odd she won't drink. Could you mix the Corid water into a mash with some chick crumbles and see if she'd eat that? She'd get some hydration that way too.

Otherwise, try lay off syringing her and make her drink out of the waterer.

The rest of your flock isn't on Corid? Generally, if one's got coccidiosis, they all have it, which is why I'm asking.

She finally drank water about 2 hours after I made this post. Yes the whole flock is being treated, but I isolated her because she was very sick. No one else has shown symptoms yet. I did a thorough clean out of the coop and will be getting to the run in the next couple of days. Also...after more research, I'll be keeping her isolated for several more days to make sure it doesn't spread. I'm almost positive exposure was from a wild bird they found in the yard and were trying to eat. 🤮
Thank you for responding to me!

As long as they're all on Corid, she'd be fine being with the others, but only if she's eating, drinking, and feeling better. That's your call though!

The Corid water should be their only source of water, and no vitamins (B1) until after 5 days. Then vitamins and probiotics are both good to get them back to healthy again!

Coccidia are always present in all environments, all chickens exposed to the outdoors have them. It's when you get a sudden population boom of Coccidia does it cause coccidiosis.
It's not likely the bird.
