coccidiosis? stress? chilled?

Right, we prefer not to use medicated feed.

The only Corid I found was for calves, but I did find another brand that was specifically for poultry coccidiosis. I misread the second chicken and she ended being fine so I put her back with the others.

I've been dropper feeding the other one in the coop and she's actually perked up a little. I put some of the medicated water in a little bit of feed and she ate some from my hand. I think she may make it.

Thank you all so much! This site is wonderful and all you peeps are amazing support!!

I preferred not to use medicated food either until I started having chicks die, lost 4. I wanted to keep everything my chicks (chickens) all natural. Luckily it worked and saved 3 of my chicks. So I have finally decided that for my chicks I will use it, would rather use it and not have my chicks die than to not to. If the chicks get sick, they end up medicated anyway.

Medicated starter feed does not prevent or treat cocci. All medicated feed does is slow down the progression of cocci,so that you can hopefully get medication in time. If your chicks do get cocci, the only thing that will help them is Corid(amprol). Cocci is a parasitic infection of the intestinal tract.

Amprolium is Amprolium, doesn't matter whether it's labeled for calves, pigs, chickens, people, whatever... Most people use the 20% powder labeled for calves easily found at most feed stores, or the liquid, and I don't even know what that's labeled for.

We never, ever had a coccidiosis out break here. Yet, the soggy weather this spring has been completely odd. Certainly a contributor, perhaps, but in any case we had a recent outbreak that was particularly virulent. It went right through the medicated feed. Chicks went from fine to deader than doornails literally in hours. My fault. I failed to have Corid or other treatment on hand. Saved a bunch of chicks with yogurt, (as I've no immediate access to raw milk), just to stall for a bit of time. Secured the Corid 20% powder and all is well. I'll never use medicated feed again.

There are 8 or 9 named strains and they are morphing or at least adapting. Having coccidiosis take out a hatch of priceless birds is not tolerable. Since coccidiosis feeds on thiamine, vitamin supplements would logically seem to harm, not help, the chick fight it off.

I'm a huge believer in building immunity, but burying a bunch of your prized chicks? Not much fun.

Medicated starter feed does not prevent cocci, all it does is slow down the progression of cocci, hopefully gives you enough time to get medication. Never give vitamins when treating chicks for cocci. interferes with medication.

Agreed

That hopefully part? Nah. From now on, medicated waterers go out with the chicks when they hit the ground and for a few days prior.

agreed. hen raised chicks even get the medicated feed here. i have tried both ways over the years and medicated feed works here. i didn't have any bad losses from not feeding it but i think the chicks do better when they get it.

From what I have read all chickens have cocci. The reason it starts killing the chicks is because it overloads their systems before they can build an immunity to it. All I know is I lost 4 chicks, started medicated feed and 5 days later all the chicks left are doing great. I will be getting some Corid to have on hand incase something like this happens again.
