Cocerned about raising roosters for meat

Two of my 4 CornishX cockerels were crowing by 6 wks (I think one started around 4.5 or 5 wks in fact). Mind they probably won't *all* do that, but, you know.

Good luck,

Pat

I raised 25 mixed heavy and 25 mixed "fancies" roosters this summer. A couple started crowing at 5 weeks. Some never crowed (at least not in front of me). All were slaughtered by 6 months.

If you are raising purebred roosters for meat, they certainly will be crowing by the time they are ready to be eaten... which is usually at the 15+ week mark. They'll very much be males.

Oh yes, if you don't mean CornishX, it could be earlier as well. Heck I had a campine cockerel (admittedly not a breed you would choose for meat

) who started crowing at, IIRC, 18 days old.

just how close are these neighbors and how many of them are there??

You would be surprised how people become deaf and more tolerant when they have a nice free, freshly butchered chicken in their refrigerator..

don't call it bribery,,, call it sharing the wealth..
