Hi!

New to having chickens here....don't even have my first one yet! I'm researching the egg laying difference between a Cochin and Brahma Bantam. I know what the Brahmas can produce, friends have them, but I LOVE the look of the Cochin. Can they/do they lay the same amount as a Brahma or is this all according to the diet they eat. I show dogs, so how they look means alot to me :)

Thanks!

I agree with the broody aspect of this conversation. I have 3 Cochin hens and no eggs. One is raising a chick, 2 other hens gave me 1 egg.
Hopefully Brahmas are egg layers for your sake! lol
Cochins are classified as "Ornimental", not egg producers yet I'd never give up my Cochin birds! They are sweet, casual and very proud (not that others aren't).

My brahma banty lays big eggs- I guess "medium" size, but big for a banty. My cochins lay just as often, but eggs are much smaller. They only went broody this year in early spring, and quickly recovered. I wish my brahma had some fertile eggs, but I only have cochin roos, and I don't think they can reach her through that big fluffy butt. The brahma isn't as sociable either.

Thank you for the replies. I know cochins can go broody, but from what I've read most bantams can

I ordered my chicks yesterday, decided on the cochins and added a couple of Araucanas for my granddaughter. Thanks again!

I know this is an older post - but I just wanted to say that you would be surprised what a little cochin bantam can reach through his big fluffy butt! I crossed a blue cochin rooster with a standard americana hen and got some really beautiful mixed chickens. Had a blue cochin hen with muffs that layed a blue egg - how about that? lol
