Hi all, I saw an old post with another Rooster that had what appeared to be same issue as mine but there were no repies to her question. So I'm starting up again. My year old Cochin rooster has had pink areas on his legs, losing feathers for some time....months. I thought it was just normal....as he was great otherwise. Now the pink has turned to red and he has some bloody spots where feathers have broken or been pulled out. He appears fine otherwise, moving around, eating, mounting the girls... All 9 of my Cochin hens have normal feet. He's the only one with the problem. Fungus, mites, other? I dont know. They go out to a large turnout area that is dirt and I wet it down in areas daily during the heat. He also has an outer perimeter grassy area where they go out for just a half hour or so a day (not protected from predators so I just sit out there with them). Their coop has a deep hay bed on the floor and is cleaned every morning. No poop laying around at all.... Any thoughts? I do
not notice the girls pecking at his feet much...maybe once or twice but that's all I've noticed. Of course I dont know what happens at night when they're up on their branch. He does not groom himself obsessively either. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!!

Hmm I have not seen that before - I guess I would put some Nu stock on and see if it helped if it were my boy. I have read other people saying they like Nu stock on BYC, but I have not tried it myself.

Not sure what the problem is, though...just thought it might soothe it. I wonder if it is infected.

thanks! I'll check it out... he doesnt appear to be walking any differently...but certainly is inflamed.

Hello I'm the woman that nobody responded to. It doesn't look like what I had going on. What I did was soaked him in pain salt for about 15 min three tim s a day, and in between I would use neosporin. Plain. No pain relief it's toxic. Seemed to work for the infections but his legs are still very swollen and he's growing new feathers on his feet. Breaking news holes
Take Care

Did you ever figure this out. My Brahma roo has the same problem. No one else has it. I've treated for mites with permethrin and am using vaseline but it doesn't seem to help.

Hi! My Blue Cochin rooster has this same exact issue. Red inflamed feet especially around where the feathers grow out. It dosent seem to be scaly leg mites. Anyone know what works best to treat this problem? Thank you :hmm

I had a brahma rooster that would have his legs get like this intermittently. I kind of came to the conclusion that it was probably something genetic since none of my others with feathered legs had this issue. He would break feathers off just during his normal activities, sometimes blood feathers, so it would bleed a lot. It would get red and sore looking like your picture with lots of broken shafts. I never saw any signs or evidence of mites on him, just irritation around the feather shafts/folicles. I would use coconut oil on it since it's soothing and mildly antibacterial, and wrap with co-flex bandaging (not real tight) to protect the feather shafts, and check and change every couple of days. It would calm down and he'd look really good for a while, and then it would flair up again later, I think when shafts got broken again at the skin level. If you get the oil on the bandaging it won't want to stick to itself..........

Thank you SO MUCH! I will definitely try that on him. Poor guy he dosent seem to mind it much but the red and swelling does look painful.
