Cochin What Color???

They were from Thom Dean. He's got a lot of breeds going now- including FBCM- and I think maybe they lost track with the cochins. Anyone that considers themself a breeder should know better. I was really disappointed. They all started out great- and just like yours- grew out to awful. The girls were excellent though.

When did you get them? I got actual chicks sent. The roos ended up really nice in type- but with the bad coloring. Also I had that one guy with a pea comb. The girls grew out so well- I can't believe they are from the same person

I got mine from Thom Dean too! This came out of the blue pen. I have been there (actually was there today!). There is NO mixing, believe me!

ETA: Thom only keeps blues. Anything else that, "pops up," he moves to the cull pen. That is where I got this lovely gal. There is no mixing, I assure you. he has a marvelous setup!

I was hoping he was a lemon blue, but my luck would be he's just a bad blue

I've seen a gorgeouse lemon blue rooster on someones hatching eggs that had the nice gold yellow hackles that reminded me of my boy, but he had a nice lemon chest that my rooster doesn't have. I was hoping that if I crossed him on some buff hens I could get the yellow buff a little more dominate, but now I'm rethinking even using him at all after reading some of the replies.

I may just play with him a bit and see what I could get out of his offspring. The cochins are just a fun breed for us, we love the temperments on them and the color variety in them, plus they keep us in eggs when we're selling all the laying hens eggs.

thanks again everyone for your responses, keep em coming.

He'd be great as a project bird! Do you have a buff cochin hen? Do it!

Worst thing that could happen- you have a bunch of pretty broodies to decorate your yard.

That's a lovely girl Kathy!
I don't think he's mixing- I think he has someone carrying leakage and hasn't culled it. He sells a lot of birds- and I feel bad for recommending him before the ones I got grew out. Luckily- I had birds from more than one person- or I'd have another year to wait for new roos to grow out.

Sorry to hijack the thread!

I ordered Giant Blue Cochin eggs from him last year. Most of the birds are exceptional. My Roo is gorgeous. He had a brother who leaked gold and was culled.
But with any breed there is culling to be done. I would buy from him again.

Kathy, that hen is gorgeous! That is where you got the curly feathered ones that you gave to me and I love them and wouldn't change a thing except maybe wait on a blue curly roo from Thom.
