Cochins and spurs

I've just been told Pekins/Cochins don't have spurs
Unless there has been some kind of cross breeding
Is this true?

Definitely not true. I used to have some Buff Cochins and they had spurs. Even though they were a gentle breed, I always kept their spurs trimmed.

This is what an eBay member told me:


i actually contacted the pekin club way back when a member regarding spurs and got told by breeders that spurs are undesirable and some where down the line its been crossed possibly with a silkie to produce a very broody chcken and then tried to be bred out but down the line the gene has resurfaced. luckily i hadnt put the brought in cockerel into the run with any of my females, so these are all pure pekins. when breeding millefleurs .... if you put a blue millefleur male with blue millefleur hens you dont get blue milefleurs, instead they come out splashes. ie one base colour ie white/ brown. black. with paint like streaks ( splash)

I guess its just saying they are undesirable and they tried to breed them out, not that they shouldn't have them, I just can't remove the spurs, I'm not good with blood or thinking I might be hurting him
They are way to big to file but ill try blunt them when he's more calmer with me holding him

Another difference might be that my Cochins were standard Cochins, not bantams. And some breeders consider Pekins to be a completely different breed from Cochins. I don't know enough about Pekin bantams to know why, but perhaps spurs (or lack of) is one of the distinctions. Maybe another BYC member who specializes in Pekins would know.

Yes that's true I thought Pekins and Cochins were just different names for the same breed
