But I mean... if you look at the OG Little Mermaid tale, it's pretty unbelievable as well... nothing like the "Under the Sea" that we know today, with Disney and such

Exactly. Disney tends to tone down the originals for kids, but the originals themselves are pretty nasty.
I read a version of Cinderella where the sisters went to the wedding at the end, and two ravens perched on either side of the path. As the sisters passed, each raven pecked out one eye from each of the sisters. On the way back, the sisters swapped places, and the ravens pecked out their other eyes, thus leaving them blind.
In this same version, of course, one stepsister cut off part of her heel to fit her foot into the glass slipper, and the other one cut off her big toe. The prince saw the blood, however, and knew that neither of the stepsisters were Cinderella.
