Cock or Hen

Ya see, he knows that crowing will cause his exodus; therefore, he is silent.

Some roosters are just slower starters or less frequent crowers than others.

So I too live in area I can't have roo's but you see i'm a bit of a law breaker got myself 6 chicks this past april and guess what...4 off the bat turned into roos the only pullet I had ended up being a pain and I rehomed her with the roos so that left me with 1 who was a silkie who I adored...well guess what just as he was starting to fill out he turned into a rooster and finally found his voice so Here is what I do.

I let him go out with the girls...but NOT until around 11 am if you work in the am then as late as you can...he stays out with the girls and crows a few times and goes into the coop with the girls to go to bed where I go out and scoop him up and place him in a big box I have. He comes inside the house (because I already feel bad about him being in the box) and sleeps until I let him out the next morning.

I figured as long as he isn't crowing at the crack of dawn whats it going to hurt if he does it when no body is home. Plus he has been very considerate there are some nights I just don't feel like going out to collect him SO he stays in the coop nice boy doesn't crow until I let them out and our coop even has a skylight so its VERY bright inside.
