We used to get our lawn done by TruGreen, and then we had chickens. They called me and asked if I wanted to do our lawn this year, and I explained that I would use an Organic product that could be injested by the goats and chickens. Then they told me about Cockadoodle-Doo, an Organic brand that makes fertilizers and weed destroyers safe for humans and pets, and its made from chicken poo!

Its made by Pure Barnyard Inc.

I've been looking it up and hear only good things, but I wanted to get your ideas on the product before they come out and apply it. Anybody here use it?

Chicken poo is the only fertilizer that hits our lawn. Of course I could care less what it looks like (the lawn, that is)
I would ask them what the weed killer part is.

It's two seperate products. The fertilizer is just pasteurized chicken manure. I don't understand why any chicken owners would go out and buy more chicken poo.

The other product is corn gluten, a corn by product. A few years back somebody discovered that this stuff kills germinating seeds so it now sold as an organic pre-emergent herbicide. Basically if your lawn is infested with annual weeds like crabgrass, sandburr, puncturevine, etc. that sprout from seed each spring, you can apply this very early in the spring and it kills any new plants as the seeds germinate. It does nothing to the grass, plants, or weeds that that are already there, it only affects seeds.

I don't understand the part in the article about the fellow who was concerned about fertilizer runoff, so he bought 12,000 lbs of this stuff for his lawn and gardens. Nitrogen runoff is still nitrogen runoff whether it comes from chemical fertilizers or manure...

While we haven't used that brand, we have used corn gluten-based natural "weed and feed" and it is EXCELLENT stuff.

The caveat is that because it's a pre-emergent weed killer, it has to be applied before the weeds start to germinate, i.e. early spring. If you use it now, you'll get the benefit of the fertilizer and maybe halt some late-germinating weeds like crabgrass (depending on where you are) but dandelions, etc are already up. You need to use it in the fall as well, then early next spring. Also, don't use it when reseeding with grass seed, the seed won't germinate.

I am ALL FOR this stuff, it is great.

My chickens get the run of our "back yard" (about 1/2 and acre) but are fenced off from the front because of the road. I planned to use the fertilizer in the front areas mainly, and the weed control products all over the yard. I dont compost (I would love to, but cant stand the smells...and I was never able to get it to work right for soem reason.) so it makes sence for me, anyway, to buy a product that I can just apply right to the lawn and know that it is safe. I have a daycare here, and I just can not see laying straw and chicken manure covering my lawn! Parents would be turned off! A ready-to-use and Organic product, would work well in my case. If I could let the chickens range the front as well, I wouldn't need it, but we live right on an intersection, and while yes, there are stop signs, not everyone stops and the speed limit is 55 from each way. Even my children dont go in the road.

Hi, I don't have chickens but I do have dogs and I've used this product and I'm VERY happy with the results. I live in Wisconsin. I started by looking up organic fertilizers, and came across a lot of good feedback on Cockadoodle Doo on the internet, so I thought I'd give it a try.

When we first purchased our home, our lawn was awful. We did some landscaping in our back yard, and the grass was so weak that we could easily pull it out by hand. We watered, weeded, used the typical weed killers that we purchased at a local home improvement store and our lawn never improved.

Last year, we started using the weed control and the fertilizer. You apply them 60 days apart, and keep alternating. This year, our lawn came up green and lush. We were doing some more landscaping and tried pulling some grass out by hand - no way - it is so strong we had to rent a tiller.

The weed control works well too. We don't have as many weeds this year, but the way it works is that the fertilizer makes your grass so strong that it can't be taken over by weeds. The more you use it, the stronger and better your lawn will get. I love this product. I had to drive 50 minutes out of the city to get it this year because the only store in my area was sold out - some guy came in and purchased every bag they had.

I also have dogs, so using something organic is very important to me.

One other thing - the first couple of years that we were here we used typical store brand weed & feed for our lawn. We live in the city in a nice, upscale residential area. While using the non-organic products, we had several dead birds on our lawn, and a dead rat (yes, a rat!) within weeks of eachother. At first we thought maybe the birds were due to the West Nile Virus (or whatever virus it is that birds carry), but I really think it was the chemical weed killers that we were using, because it was like clockwork. We'd apply the stuff to our lawns, and soon we'd find a dead bird. My husband was also seeding the lawn at that time too, so the birds were probably feeding on the seed, and poisoning themselves in the process. I don't know about the rat. But, kind of scary that they sell stuff for your lawns that is that toxic to our environment. I never drink tap water, needless to say. In any case, since we started using Cockadoodle Doo, no problems with dead birds or animals. Is there a correlation? I can't say for sure, but it's just my opinion and I'd rather err on the safe side.

Good luck in whatever you decide.
