I have noticed my one cockerel, Copper, is showing more interest the the ladies and now he is spending time on the roost in front of the nest boxes. Today he even went in and laid down for awhile. He isn’t the #1 alpha rooster. My main dude is a big black Cochin. I have never heard Copper crow yet. Either he is still too young or smart enough not to challenge Rebel the Cochin. Could it be he is trying to quietly encourage the pullets to come lay? I have several pullets the same age as Copper that are squatting. I’m just curious if his behavior is for a reason or he just wanted to hang out in a nest box? Thanks.

Sometimes it could be for a reason. Maybe he wants to hang around inside the coop so he doesn't get in the way of the Alpha male.
Maybe he's waiting for the hens to stop laying... then... you know.. jump on 'em :)
Maybe he follows around his favorite hen, or just wants to relax for a while.

Whatever it may be, it's not an issue :)

I’ve read the boy chickens will do this - go into the nesting boxes and tell the girls they found a good place to lay eggs. Is he trilling and making the ‘I found something tasty!’ sound? My bantam boy goes into the nesting boxes on occasion (I’ve filmed him doing it and have posted it on my Instagram account). When my Eddie was about 5 months old he did the same thing - got into the nesting box and started scritching around and trilling. Super adorbs :love .

He may be hiding from the other cock/erels......how many do you have?
He may be doing the 'here's a good place to lay' thing.
Most likely he is stalking the nests so he can try to mate the girls.
How old is he, in weeks or months?

He doesn’t make a sound. As a matter of fact I’ve never have heard him crow. He might be intimidated by Rebel my alpha Cochin rooster.

Copper is just over 20 weeks. He never makes a sound. I’ve never heard him crow but I’ve watched him grab some of the pullets his age. There are at least 3-4 starting to lay tiny eggs the past week. I’ve noticed more starting to squat. I think he is too scared of my alpha rooster Rebel who is a black Cochin. I have had to remove 5 roosters that have challenged Rebel and it was crazy. All together I have 1 rooster about a year now and 6 cockerels who are all part of the 20 week group. I have a group of chicks and keets that are 7 weeks now. So far I know I have 1 brown leghorn cockerel and I’m questioning the sex on two Wyandottes which I need to post to see what everyone thinks.
I wish the guys would get along together. I’d keep all of them. All together I have 70! That chicken math got me! 🤣
