Cockerel attacked by older chickens

My father put my eight six week old chicks in with my year old hens and rooster last night.... they seemed fine until I went to check on them earlier and one cockerel had a massive wound near his tail. I think he was trying to protect the other chicks. I've separated the chicks again and put them back on their broader with the injured one... I put some bag balm on him, is there anything else I should do? How should I reintroduce them into the flock after he's healed? I was hoping to have gotten rid of the chicks before now but I can't get anyone to buy/take them.

Clean it up & spray with Vetericyn, Neosporin with out the pain relief, you may need to separate from the rest so they don't continue pecking at the "red" sight. You could put it in a wire cage with food & water, the cage in the coop ... It's recommended to do a "See but no touch" introduction of new chicks/chickens to a flock to prevent this from happening.

A large wire dog crate with food and water inside the coop or run, is a good way to introduce new or younger birds and keep them safe. How many cockerels do you have? Are you keeping any of the chicks? I would spray some blukote over the wounds unless they are very deep, just so his mates won’t peck at them. Ideally, I like to use betadine and plain Triple Antibiotic Ointment on the wounds, but he needs to stay with his other chicks. Usually, chicks are safer with older birds if they are closer in size. Hens can be quite mean to new chicks unless they have raised by a broody hen who protects them.

I currently have a roo in a look but don't touch coop, he's one I gave to a friend and they all got just tossed into the coop with the bigger ones, I picked him up from her and have been using antibiotic ointment on him after cleaning the wounds well. Keep a close watch on him, give him time to heal and give them all time to grow more.

I have two cockerels and I didn't plan on keeping any of these chicks, I was hoping to hatch out pure Lavender orpingtons but all I got was some mixes. The Rooster I have is close to 11lbs. I think he is the one who bullied the younger cockerel.

Oh no!There is an article in the learning center about merging chickens. You have to do it slowly. At least they weren’t all killed, But hopefully the chicks he is with now won’t start picking on him when they noticed the bloody sore.
